Free Patterns, Paid Patterns, Yarn, Ideas, Tips, Tales & Tangles from a Bi-Stitchual Designer
Warm Up America.was started in Wisconsin, USA by Evie Rosen, in 1991. Through this organization, tens of thousands of needy people have received blankets, hats, scarves and other items donated by generous knitters/crocheters from around the world. Where I live, it's called Warm Up Medina County.
WUMC currently provides knitted and crocheted items to 17 organizations in Medina County.
WUMC has been collecting items for donation at the Medina Library, 210 S. Broadway St, Medina, OH, 44256. I've been involved for about 7 years. Our Yarncrafters group meets every Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm, and every other Thursday afternoon from 1 to 3 pm. (Other Medina County Libraries have different meeting times and days - call your local library to see what time they meet.)
I also belong to a facebook group called Knitters & Natters Charity Matters, founded by Julie & Richard Speed of Louth, Lincolnshire, UK. Its members live in many different countries. A few years ago we decided to ask KNCM members to donate squares (we call them squares, but they're really 7" x 9" rectangles) and the International Blanket project was born. The squares were all sent to me in Ohio, I joined them together and they were donated to WUMC. KNCM continues to donate blankets and other items, and WUMC can expect to receive the "Ohio Blanket" from them each year. The 2014 blanket theme was "50 Shades of Gray."
